About GU:
Gauhati University was established in the early years of Indian Independence. It was in the year 1948, January 26, when GU came into existence by an act of the State Legislature – the Gauhati University Act 1947 (Assam Act, XVI of 1947) under the Government of Assam. Guahati University is one of those few institutes in the country that is funded by the University Grants Commission and the Government of Assam. Besides, there are a number of agencies of the Central and State Government providing various grants and assistance for Research and other Academic activities conducted by the University. In its 58th year anniversary, GU has been recognised to be one of the oldest, largest, and the most premier seats of higher education in the entire North Eastern Region of India.

Other Info:
National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) of UGC has bestowed Gauhati University with the status of a 4-star (****) institution. Formerly the educational program started functioning from the city centre and it was only 1955-56 that the entire functioning was shifted to the present campus.
