Higher Education
Higher education in India consist of different streams with each stream indirectly controlled by the Ministry of Human Resource Development. Most indian universities are administered by the indian law, but, there are 18 important universities called Central Universities, which are maintained by the Union Government. The extra funding of central universities give them an advantage over their state competitors.
Beside the hundreds of state universities, there is a web of research institutions that provide chances for advanced distance learning and research leading up to a PhDs in niches like science, technology and agriculture. 25 of these educational Indian institutions come under the national flag of the CSIR – Council of Scientific and Industrial Research and the rest are controlled by the ICAR – Indian Council of Agricultural Research. In addition, the DAE – Department of Atomic Energy, and other ministries support various research laboratories. There are several thousand colleges (affiliated to indian universities) that provide undergraduate science, agriculture, commerce and humanities educational courses in India.
The Indian Higher Education system includes, 10 years of primary and secondary education followed up by 2 years of higher secondary education. The Bachelor’s degrees, is given after three years study in the case of performing arts, and four years in the case of most professional degrees. The Masters degrees usually take two years of study. The research degrees (M.Phil and Ph.D) take variable time depending upon the performance of the individual student. The postgraduate degree programs involve 2 years of study after the first degree. These include M.Tech, MD, MS and MDS programs that take 2 years after B.Tech and MBBS/BDS. The M.Phil. program takes 1,5 year of study time. It is a prestage program for doctoral level studies. PhD programs are research studies for 2 years, while D.Sc. and D.Litt. can be awarded by universities after the PhD degree for outstanding performance.
In addition to the degree programs, diploma and certificate programs are also available in specific Indian universities. The education offered is wide and covers anything from nursing to information management. Both undergraduate diploma programs and postgraduate programs are available and study duration varies from 1 to 3 years.
State Universities, deemed universities and education institutions of national importance are mostly designed and managed by Indian law. Which results in educational programs which are mainly considered as relevant for the national needs of India. Colleges and other institutes are mainly regulated by the affiliated or associated Universities. Given the range/variety of educational institutions and offered courses & programs, regulatory entities and national councils are established as quality insurance for develpoment of India’s the higher education model.

Dear sir,
You have wrongly typed the duration for Agricultural/Fisheries/Veterinary courses as 3 years.
But it is four years for Agricultural/Fisheries and Five years for Veterinary sciences. It is common for all the professional colleges work under the umbrella of Indian Council for Agricultural Research (ICAR). I have no idea about private institutions.
It needs correction.
