About TISS:
Formerly known as the “Sir Dorabji Tata Graduate School of Social Work”, the institute was established in 1936. It was not until the year 1944, that it was renamed Tata Institute of Social Sciences, and 20 years past its renaming i.e. in 1964, UGC has accorded the institute the status of a Deemed University. TISS receives its financial aids from UGC, and the institute is also a paneled member of the Association of Indian Universities.

Looked upon as one of the most premier institutions offering modern educational programs and courses in India, DC, Pune was established on October6, 1821. It was round the year 1956, when the United Nations joined hands with Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and the Government of India to establish the Institute. The prime objective behind its inception was to meet the educational demands at the regional level that is mainly related to teaching, training and conducting research in the area of population studies. Formerly known as the “Demographic Training and Research Centre (DTRC)”, the institute was renamed the Indian Institute for Population Studies only in 1970.
