Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IITK)

The Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, or also known as IIT Kanpur or IITK, was established in 1959 as one of the IIT institutes. Located in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, it has been one of the best reputed technological institutes in India. The campus complex is built on an approximately 4.3 square km land with all in facilities to support the academic and research activities.

Academic Program

IIT Kanpur comprises undergraduate and postgraduate programs in four departments:

1.      Department of Engineering, with concentrations on the following subjects: Aerospace Engineering, Biological Sciences and Bio Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Industrial & Management Engineering, Materials & Metallurgical Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering.

2.      Department of Humanities, with concentration on Humanities and Social Sciences

3.      Department of Management, with main focuses on Industrial and Management Engineering

4.      Department of Science, with concentrations on Chemistry, Mathematics & Statistics, and Physics.

There are also interdisciplinary programs in Laser Technology, Environmental Engineering and Management, Master of Design, Material Science Program, and Nuclear Engineering & Technology.

Undergraduate programs are offered as follows:

1.      B.Tech programs in Aerospace Engineering, Biological Sciences and Bio-Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science & Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and also B.Tech in Materials & Metallurgical Engineering. All are 4-year B.Tech programs.

2.      M.Sc, which is a 5-year integrated program focused on fields such as Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Engineering Sciences, Technical Arts, and Humanities & Social Sciences.

3.      M.Sc, which is a 2-year program focused on the following fields: Chemistry, Mathematics, Statistics, and Physics.

4.      Dual degree program, which is opened for B.Tech/M.Tech in Aerospace Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science & Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and in Mechanical Engineering.

The postgraduate programs are offered as follows:

1.      M.Tech programs in the following concentrations: Aerospace Engineering, Biological Sciences & Bio-Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science & Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Environmental Engineering & Management, Mechanical Engineering, Materials and Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science, Industrial & Management Engineering, Nuclear Engineering and Technology, and Laser Technology.

2.      Master of Design.

3.      Master of Business Administration in Industrial and Management Engineering.

4.      M.Sc, which is a 5-year integrated program in Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, and Scientific Computing.

5.      M.Sc, which is a 2-year program in Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, and Statistics.

6.      PhD programs in wide array of selections: Aerospace Engineering, Biological Sciences and Bio- Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science & Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials and Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science, Industrial & Management Engineering, Nuclear Engineering and Technology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Statistics, English, Economics, Philosophy, Psychology, and in Sociology.

7.      D.I.I.T, which is a 2-semester program for industrial sponsored candidates.

8.      Dual degree program, which is available for M.Sc/PhD in Physics.

Undergraduate admission is based on the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE), while it is either GATE, JAM, or JMET score that counts for graduate admission.

Other info on IIT Kanpur

ITT Kanpur is perhaps one of the few universities that house so many facilities for the students. For standard facilities, there are laboratories, 24-hour health center, banks, post office, shopping center, transportation service, gas station, student clubs in various areas, gym, community center, nine hostels (2 of them are for girls), and big capacity auditorium. Besides that, there are also Olympic size swimming pool with 8 lanes, as well as indoor and outdoor courts for many sports such as tennis, volleyball, basketball, badminton, hockey, football, cricket, and many others.
