Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IITM)

Indian Institute of Technology Madras, or also known as IIT Madras, was established in 1959. Now it is a residential institute with over 4000 students. IIT Madras is located in Chennai/Madras, Tamilnadu, India. As one of the most reputed institutions for engineering and science fields in the country, IIT Madras campus is one with thorough infrastructures. There are some research centers and almost 100 laboratories in the complex, which certainly support the research activities in the institution. The overall academic activities have actually gained IIT Madras a name in the international academic world.

Academic Program

There are 16 departments in Indian Institute of Technology Madras: Department of Aerospace Engineering, Department of Applied Mechanics, Department of Biotechnology, Department of Chemical Engineering, Department of Chemistry, Department of Civil Engineering, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Department of Electrical Engineering, Department of Engineering Design, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, Department of Ocean Engineering, Department of Physics, Department of Management Studies, Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, and the Department of Mathematics.

The institute comprises the following degree programs:

1. B.Tech and Dual Degree programs, which are offered in 12 departments except in the departments of: Management Studies, Humanities and Social Sciences, Mathematics, and Chemistry.
2. Doctoral programs, which are offered in all 16 departments.
3. M.Tech programs, which are offered in 13 departments except in the departments of Management Studies, Humanities and Social Sciences, and Chemistry. There are also user oriented programs for M.Tech with specializations in Port Management, Building Technology and Construction Management, Computational Mechanics, Automotive Technology, Software Engineering, and Digital Signal Processing in the relevant departments.
4. M.Sc programs, which are offered in three departments: Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry
5. MA program, which is a five-year integrated program offered in the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences.
6. MBA degree

Undergraduate admission will be based on the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) and/or The Humanities and Social Sciences Entrance Exam (HSEE). Graduate admission will use the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) and/or Joint Admission to M.Sc. (JAM) test scores. While that, admission to MBA program will apply the score from Joint Management Entrance Test (JMET).

Interdisciplinary research projects are focused in 16 areas of study: Chemical Physics & Molecular Biology, Environmental Technology, Communication Technology, MEMS, Development Studies, Measurement, Testing & Diagnostics, Quality Assured Design & Manufacturing, Instrumentation & Control, Energy Technology, Materials Technology, Methodologies, Complex Systems, Infrastructure Technology, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Computing Technology, and in IT Enabled Technologies. In addition, there are also other sponsored research programs being held.

Facilities

IIT Madras also maintains other supporting facilities and student activities in the institution complex. There are 17 hostels, of which two are excusive for female students, extra curricular activities, cultural events, festivals, food centers, banks, health center, guest houses, transportation service, temples, canteens, shopping center, etc. The University caters to all its resident students and day scholars providing adequate research and development environment for their mental stimulation as well as progress.
