Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee is located in Roorkee, Uttarakhand, India. Also known as IIT Roorkee, the first engineering institute of modern India established in 1847 is currently affiliated to University of Calcutta and Allahabad University. IIT Roorker is in fact the 63^rd best universities based on QS.com Asian University Rankings 2009, as well as one of the biggest technical institutions in the country. Educational Programs 

IIT Roorkee comprises 18 departments in the study program. They are categorized as follows: Architecture and Planning, Biotechnology, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Earthquake Engineering, Earth Sciences, Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Computer Engineering, Humanities and Social Sciences, Hydrology, Management Studies, Mathematics, Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, Paper Technology, Physics, and Water Resources Development and Management.

IIT-Rourkee offers several educational courses at the UG, PG and doctorate levels through its different constituent and affiliated colleges and educational institutions.

Under Graduate Courses: IITR offers 10 UG educational leading to B. Arch.and B. Tech. of 5 and 4 years duration, respectively. Under Graduate courses offered are as follows: B.Arch, B.Tech in Chemical, Civil, Computer, Electrical, Electronics & communications, Industrial, mechanical, Pulp & Paper and materials Engineering.

Post Graduate Courses: IITR provides Post Graduate programs in 5 disciplines of Engineering, Applied Science, Architecture and planning. Courses offered are; M.Tech in Chemical, Civil, Computer, Electrical, Electronics & communications, Industrial, mechanical, Pulp & Paper and materials Engineering and many others, M.Arch and M.U.R.P.

PhD Programs: Research programs leading to Ph.D degree are offered in all academic departments of the Institute.

Facilities

IIT Roorkee houses 14 hostels in the campus complex. There are hostels for boys, girls, and married students from all study levels. Student life is colored by both traditional and modern values. The institution supports student clubs, sport facilities, guest houses, wifi, hobby clubs, hangout places, banks, post offices, child care center, transportation service, health service, temples, and many others that build up life fulfilling aspects of students and staffs.

Established in 1847, Indian Institute of Technology – Roorkee (IITR) is one of the most premier institutes of national importance imparting higher technological education. Today IITR has made its place amongst the best technological institutions in the world and the technological contributions made by the Institute in all sectors of technological development cannot be denied. Not only is the University one among the list of recognized institutes by UGC, but has also been approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).

IIT-Roorkee ranked 6th among the top E-Schools of the country as per a survey organized by India Today-AC Nielsen-ORG Marg Survey of Colleges for 2006-07. The Institute celebrated its 150th year of birthday in October 1996. It was on September 21, 2001 through an Ordinance issued by the Government of India that declared IITR as the 7th ranking institutes in the fraternity of the IITs and bestowed upon it the status of “Institute of National Importance”.
