Indian Maritime University Chennai

Indian Maritime University (IMU), or also known as Central Government University, is located in Chennai. It was established in 2008 under the Indian Maritime University Act 2008. Besides the one campus in Chennai, there are three more in Calcutta, Mumbai, and Visakhapatnam. The university has granted ISO 9001:2000 Certification and grade 1 rating from ICRA.

At the moment, there are seven government institutions and maritime training & research institutes that merge with Indian Maritime University: Marine Engineering & Research Institute (both in Kolkata and Mumbai), the Lal Bahadur Shastri College of Advanced Maritime Studies and Research in Mumbai), the T.S. Chanakya in Mumbai, the National Maritime Academy, in Chennai, the Indian Institute of Port Management in Calcutta, and the National Ship Design and Research Centre in Visakhapatnam.

Academic Program

The Indian Maritime University will be managing the following eight academic departments when all infrastructures are done: Department of Port Management, Department of Nautical Science, Department of Marine Engineering, Department of Transport & Logistics, Department of Marine Sciences, Department of Maritime Law, Department of Naval Architecture & Ship Building, and the Department of Inland Water Transport.

At the present, there are three operating departments:

1. Department of Port Management, with main areas of study in Traffic Operations, Finance, Engineering, Human resource Management, General Management, and Computer Application. The course fees are Rs.500/day for participants from the Major Ports, IPA, IMU Regional Campuses, Ministry of Shipping, Rs600/day for those from Non Major Ports and Maritime Boards, and RS.1400/day for those from other organizations.
2. Department of Nautical Science, which grants B.Sc in Nautical Science.
3. Department of Marine Engineering. Prospective students can visit the site later for further information about current admission and course fees.

Besides the academic programs, there are also training programs in the departments of Marine and Port.

The university has wide rage of supporting facilities to support students learning and exploring process. There are Ship Maneuvering Simulator, Engine-room Simulator, workshops, audio visual facilities, laboratories, computer lab, and library. Workshops are conducted in various areas such as plumbing, electrical, pneumatic, fitting, hydraulics, and others. There are laboratories for chemistry, physics, navigation, as well as computer laboratory. In addition, the library is one of the best in the sector because there are huge collection of books, journals, and magazines, and other resources that support the academic courses and practices. There are also hostels, student clubs, guest house, banks, health service, sport center, communication service, and others. For sporting activities, there are outdoor and indoor facilities and also swimming pool. The current hostel has capacity of 250 students.
