Indian School of Mines Dhanbad

Indian School of Mines, founded in 1926, is a fully residential and co-educational university. Located in Dhanbad, Jharkhand, India, it is one of the top engineering universities in the country. Now the university offers wide range of subjects in engineering and scientific fields. Many popular and successful engineers in the country are graduates from the Indian School of Mines. There are over 2,000 students currently studying in the urban campus, built on 220 acres of land.

Academic Program

There are 15 academic departments in the Indian School of Mines:

1. Department of Applied Chemistry, which offers 5 year integrated M.Sc in Chemistry, 2 year M.Sc in Chemistry, M.Phil in Applied Chemistry, PhD programs, B.Tech programs, and also M.Tech degree programs. Research activities are focused on the following areas: fly ash characterization and utilization, polymer chemistry, corrosion science and technology, prevention of scale formation in oil wells, clay catalysis, ceramics materials, synthetic inorganic, arsenic contamination, environmental pollution, nanotechnology, host-guest chemistry, and surface coatings.
2. Department of Applied Mathematics, which offers 2 Year M.Sc in Mathematics and Computing, 5 Year Integrated M.Sc. in Mathematics & Computing, and 1 Year M.Phil in Applied Mathematics. There are also PhD degree programs. The main research activities are conducted in the fields of theoretical seismology, fluid dynamics, magneto hydrodynamics, operations research, optimization techniques, fuzzy mathematics, non linear dynamics and chaos modeling, statistics, ground water, software reliability, pseudo differential operator & integral transforms, complex analysis, computational fluid dynamics, and applications of numerical analysis and computer.
3. Department of Applied Geology, which offers 2 year M.Sc Applied Geology, 3 year M.Sc and M.Tech in Applied Geology, and 5 year Integrated M.Sc. And M.Tech in Applied Geology. M.tech degrees are available in Mineral Exploration, Engineering Geology, and Petroleum Exploration, and there is also PhD degree program. All programs mainly focus on mineral exploration, engineering geology, coal geology, hydrogeology, and petroleum geology.
4. Department of Environmental Science and Engineering, which offers M.Tech in Environmental Science & Engineering and PhD in Environmental Science & Engineering. There is also B.Tech in Environmental Engineering for undergraduate students. The department has been completing major research programs and gaining big reputation throughout the country.
5. Department of Applied Physics, which offers B.Tech program, 2 year M.Sc in Applied Physics, 5 year Integrated M.Sc in Applied Physics, and M.Phil in Applied Physics. The research programs are focused on the following areas: solid state physics, thin film technology, mineral physics, biomedical physics, nano-science, fiber optics, theoretical physics, and atomic, molecular, & laser physics.
6. Department of Management Studies, which offers MBA degree and M.Tech in Industrial Engineering & Management.
7. Department of Mechanical Engineering and Mining Machinery Engineering. The department offers undergraduate programs in Mining Machinery Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. While that, postgraduate programs are available in Mining Machinery Engineering, Drilling Engineering, and Maintenance Engineering.
8. Department of Computer Science & Engineering, which offers B.Tech program, M.Tech in Computer Applications, and Ph.D. in Computer Science and Computer Science & Engineering. The research activities include the subjects in parallel and distributed processing, network security, computational biology, internet technology, VLSI design, cellular automata, interconnection network, algorithms design and analysis, and graph theory.
9. Department of Electronics Engineering, which offers B. Tech in Electronics Engineering, M. Tech in Electronics & Communication Engineering, as well as PhD program. Research activities are focused on the areas of microprocessors, electronic devices, optical fiber communication and sensors, digital image and signal processing, microwaves & antennas, computational electro-magnetics, instrumentation and digital control, and computer vision & microelectronics.
10. Department of Petroleum Engineering, which offers B.Tech in Petroleum Engineering, 5 year Integrated B.Tech in Petroleum Engineering, 5 year Integrated M.Tech in Petroleum Management, M. Tech (Petroleum Engineering, and PhD degree program.
11. Department of Applied Geophysics, which offers 3 & 5 Year M.Sc and M.Tech in Applied Geophysics, and also PhD degree.
12. Department of Mining Engineering, which offers 4-year B.Tech in Mining Engineering and 2-year M.Tech in Mining Engineering, Opencast Mining, Mine Planning & Design, Rock Excavation Engineering, Underground Space Technology, and Geomatic Engineering. There are also two dual degree programs for B. Tech/M.Tech in Mining Engineering and B. Tech in Mining Engineering & MBA.
13. Department of Fuel & Mineral Engineering, which offers B.Tech in Mineral Engineering and M.Tech in Fuel Engineering, Mineral Engineering, Clean Coal & Energy Engineering, and in Bio-mineral Processing. In addition, there are two 5-year integrated dual degree programs for B.Tech in Mineral Engineering & M.Tech in Material Technology and B.Tech in Mineral Engineering & M.Tech in Material Resource Management.
14. Department of Electrical Engineering, which offers B.Tech in Eletrical Engineering.
15. Department of Humanities and Social Science, which offers B.Tech, M. Sc, M. Sc, M.Tech, M.Phil, and PhD programs.

Indian School of Mines houses 11 hostels to accommodate all students. The library is a fully-automated one which serves all 15 departments. Having one of the biggest database in the related fields, the library consists of over 80,000 books, 8,000 PhD journals, 1,200 e-books, and over 30.000 volumes of journal database. All collection is bar-coded and managed by LIBSYS software.
