Institute of Mathematical Sciences Chennai

The Institute of Mathematical Sciences (IMSc) Chennai is located in Tamil Nadu, India. Also known as Matscience, IMSc is a research centre founded in 1962. There are under graduate and postgraduate programs offered for prospective students. The Institute of Mathematical Sciences also covers supporting facilities in the campus complex such as library, hostels, medical services, auditorium, computer center, and others.

Academic Program

The Institute of Mathematical Sciences comprises study programs in the following departments:

1. Mathematics. Only PhD program that is currently offered at this department. The main areas of focus are Algebra, Algebraic geometry, Number theory, Partial Differential Equations, Schroedinger and Jacobi operators, Subfactors, and Representation theory and Topology.
2. Theoretical Computer Science. The main areas covered by the department are: Algorithms and Data Structures, Automata Theory, Computational Complexity, Distributed Computing, Graph Theory and Combinatorics, Logics of Programs, and Semantics & Symbolic Computation. The department offers both undergraduate and postgraduate programs.
3. Theoretical Physics. The main areas of study at the department are Condensed Matter Theory, High Energy Physics, Mathematical physics, Nonlinear Dynamics, and Optics. Both undergraduate and postgraduate programs are offered in the department.

At The Institute of Mathematical Sciences, postgraduate students are given salaries which range from Rs.12500/- to 17500/-. Also, they can choose between furnished accommodation facilities or 30% HRA and medical coverage. Admission and selection process is based on the result of Joint Entrance Screening Test (JEST).
