Kannada University, Hampi

Kannada University is a public university founded in 1991 by the Government of Karnataka under the Kannada University Act 1991. It is located in Hampi, Karnataka, India. Affiliated to University Grants Commission (UGC) India, the university has main objective to develop Kannada language as well as the literature, culture, traditions, and folklore of Karnataka. Hence, academic programs including the research activities are mostly focused on the related areas of concern.

Academic Program

Kannada University comprises four faculties in the academic program:

1. Faculty of Languages. There are six departments in the faculty: Department of Kannada Literature, Department of Kannada Language Studies, Department of Dravidian Studies, Department of Translation Studies, Department of Manuscriptology, and the Department of Women’s Studies.
2. Faculty of Fine Arts. There is one department in the faculty: Department of Sculpture and Paintings.
3. Faculty of Social Sciences. There are seven departments in the faculty: Department of Folklore Studies, Department of Music and Dance, Department of History, Department of Archaeology & Ancient History, Department of Epigraphy, Department of Tribal Studies, and the Department of Development Studies.
4. Faculty of Science. There are M.Phil and PhD degree programs offered in each department, D.Lit degree program for those who want to obtain doctorate degree for their research works, M.A in Kannada Literature and Folklore, PhD Integrated Program in Kannada Literature and Folklore, Diploma in Sculpture, Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.), Diploma in Music, and also B.A. in Music.

In addition to the regular programs, there are also distant learning courses offered for the following:

1. Postgraduate Diplomas, which are available in the specializations of Translation Studies, Functional Kannada, Dalit Studies, Women’s Studies, Karnataka Studies, Dravidian Studies, and in Archaeology, Culture & Tourism.
2. Post-Matriculation Diplomas, which are available in the specializations of Development Communication, Handicrafts, Folk-Music, Theater Arts, and in Traditional Knowledge.
3. Certificate Courses, which are offered for courses in Research Methodology, Telugu, Tamil, and Malayalam.

The university also manages research activities in the academic program. Among the major research activities conducted by Kannada University are the Professional Compilation of Glossaries, Editing of Tribal and Folk Epics, Survey and Publication of Inscriptions, Compilation of Temple Encyclopedias, Preparation of catalogues of manuscripts, and the History of Minor dynasties. Many others are either finished, ongoing, or on planning. There are also routine publications such as Research and Reference Books, Periodicals, Journals, Text Books, Series for the Neo Literate, Publications of Prasaranga, Seminars, and so on managed by the faculty members and students.
