Karnatak University is located in Dharwad, Karnataka, India. Founded in 1949, the second oldest university in the state is now a public university with over 48 academic departments in three faculties. Karnatak University has over 4,500 postgraduate students and 101,000 undergraduate students. The campus complex is spread over a land of 750 acres. There are four postgraduate centers, each located in Belgaum, Karwar, Bijapur, and Haveri. Karnatak University is accredited by NAAC with “A” grade.
Academic Department
Karnatak University comprises wide selection of departments in the following areas:
- Art Departments, which consist of 11 departments as follows: Department of Kannada, Department of Folklore, Department of English, Department of Sanskrit, Department of Foreign Languages, Department of Hindi, Department of Marathi, Department of Music, Kannada Research Institute, Department of Urdu and Persian, and Department of Linguistics.
- Science Departments, which consist of 14 departments as follows: Department of Botany, Department of Chemistry, Department of Geology (Both Pure and Applied), Department of Mathematics, Department of Physics, Department of Statistics, Department of Sericulture, Department of Zoology, Department of Bio-technology, Department of Bio-Chemistry, Department of Geography (Both Pure and Applied), Department of Electronics, Department of Applied Genetics, and Department of Computer Science.
- Social Science Departments, which consist of 17 departments as follows: Department of Sociology, Department of Economics, Department of Political Science, Department of Gandhian Studies, Department of A. I. History & Epigraphy, Department of Anthropology, Department of Criminology & Forensic Science, Department of Journalism & Mass Communication, Department of Psychology, Department of Social Work, Research Center for Women’s Studies, Department of Philosophy, Department of Library and Information Science, Department of Physical Education, Department of History & Archaeology, Department of Jainology, and Department of Yoga Studies.

Overall, there are BA degrees, MA degrees in History and Archaeology and Social Work, and also PG Diploma and Certificate Courses in Tourism, Art History, Food Processing and Quality Control, Computer Application, and Arabic for postgraduate students. For academic year 2009-2010, there are MA degrees in Kannada, English, Hindu, Urdu, Marathi, Sociology, Political Science, History & Archeology, Economics, Philosophy, Sanskrit, Diploma/Advanced Diploma in Foreign Languages, and M.Com offered for postgraduate programs. Also, there are one B.Com degree and various BA degrees in English, Additional English, Kannada, Hindi, Urdu, Marathi and Sanskrit, Political Science, Sociology, History & Archeology, Education, Anthropology, Economics, and Indian Constitution offered for undergraduate students.
