Karnataka Veterinary, Animal and Fisheries Sciences University (KVAFSU) is located in Bidar, Karnataka, Karnataka, India. It is a public university founded in 200 under the Karnataka Act No. 9 of 2004. The university has seven constituent colleges namely Veterinary College, Bangalore; Veterinary College, Bidar; Veterinary College, Shimoga; Fisheries College, Mangalore; Dairy Science College, Bangalore; Dairy Science College, Gulbarga; and Veterinary College Hospital, Hassan.

Academic Program

The departments at Karnataka Veterinary, Animal and Fisheries Sciences University are categorized based on the colleges. Basically, KVAFSU offers Bachelor of Veterinary Science & Animal Husbandry (B.V.Sc. & A.H), Bachelor of Technology (Dairy Technology) (B.Tech (D.Tech)), and Bachelor of Fisheries Science at the colleges. Each college has different intake for each program.

  1. Veterinary College-Bangalore. The college comprises study programs in the following departments: Anatomy and Histology, Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Extension, Animal Reproduction Gynecology and Obstetrics, Livestock Products Technology, Veterinary Microbiology, Veterinary Pathology, Veterinary Physiology, Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine, Veterinary Public Health, Animal Nutrition, Veterinary Biochemistry, Livestock Production And Management, Parasitology, Pharmacology and Toxicology, Poultry Science, Surgery and Radiology, Clinical Veterinary Medicine, Ethics & Jurisprudence, and the Department of Animal Breeding, Genetics, & Biostatistics.
  2. Veterinary College-Bidar. The college comprises study programs in the following departments: Veterinary Science and Histology, Veterinary Physiology, Pharmacology & Toxicology, Microbiology, Parasitology, Veterinary Pathology and Veterinary Public Health, Animal Nutrition, Animal Breeding, Genetics, & Biostatistics, Livestock Production and Management, Livestock Products Technology, Veterinary Surgery & Radiology, Livestock Production and Management, Avian Production and Management, Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Extension, Veterinary Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine, Clinical Veterinary Medicine, Ethics, & Jurisprudence, and the Department of Animal reproduction, Gynaecology, & Obstetrics.
  3. Veterinary College-Shimoga. The college comprises study programs in the following 12 departments: Animal Breeding, Genetics & Biostatistics Animal Nutrition, Livestock Production & Management, Livestock Products Technology, Veterinary Anatomy, Veterinary & Animal Husbandry Extension, Veterinary Biochemistry, Veterinary Microbiology, Veterinary Pathology, Veterinary Parasitology, Veterinary Physiology, and Veterinary Pharmacology & Toxicology.
  4. Fisheries College-Mangalore. The college comprises study programs in the following departments: Aquaculture, Fishery Microbiology, Fishery Biochemistry Unit, Fisheries Environment and Ecology, Fisheries Resources and Management, Fisheries Economics, Fish Processing Technology, Fishery Engineering, Basic Sciences, and English Language Unit.
  5. Dairy Science College-Bangalore. The college comprises study programs in the following departments: Dairy Technology, Dairy Chemistry, Dairy Microbiology, Dairy Engineering, Dairy Economics & Business Management, Dairy Extension Sociology and Education Wing-Bangalore, Statistics and Computer Science, and Physical Education.
  6. Dairy Science College-Gulbarga. The college offers Bachelor of Technology in Dairy Technology.
  7. Veterinary College Hospital-Hassan. The college comprises study programs in three departments: Anatomy & Histology, Physiology and Bio-chemistry, and Animal Husbandry and Extension. There are also departments of university infrastructure such as Post-Mortem Hall, Indoor Sports Room, Library, Boy’s Hostel, Girl’s Hostel, and Staff Quarters.

Postgraduate programs are hold in two faculties at Bangalore and Bidar campuses:

  1. Faculty of Veterinary and Animal Sciences. The areas of study for postgraduate students are available as follows: Livestock Product & Technology, Livestock Production & Management, Poultry Science, Animal Genetics & Breeding, Veterinary Parasitology, Veterinary Pharmacology & Toxicology, Veterinary Physiology, Veterinary Surgery & Radiology, Veterinary Medicine, Veterinary Pathology, Veterinary Microbiology, Veterinary Anatomy & Histology, Animal Nutrition, and Animal Reproduction, Gynaecology & Obstetrics.
  2. Faculty of Fisheries and Dairy Sciences. The areas of study are available as follows: Aquaculture, Fishery Microbiology, Fisheries Environment & Ecology, Fisheries Resources & Management, and Industrial Fishery Technology.

In regards to research activities, KVAFSU maintains the following research and information centers:

  3. Livestock Research & Information Centre (Sheep), Nagamangala, Mandya.
  4. Fisheries Research & Information Centre (Marine), Bela, Ankola.
  5. Fisheries Research & Information Centre (Inland), Hebbal, Bangalore.
  6. Fisheries Research & Information Centre (Inland), Hessaraghatta, Bangalore.
