Named after Pt. Ravi Shankar Shukla, the first Chief Minister of erstwhile Madhya Pradesh, Pt. Ravi Shankar Shukla University was established in the year 1964 in Raipur, Chhattisgarh, with the aim of providing higher education at the Under Graduate and Postgraduate level. This is known to be one of the largest and oldest institutions in the state of Chhattisgarh. As far as the territorial jurisdiction of the University is concerned, it covers the entire southern and central parts of the state. Enlisted as one of the recognized Universities by the UGC, RSU is also an active member of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU).

RSU campus acquires a sprawling 207 acres of land in western Raipur. With 29 different teaching departments in the university, out of which 6 are newly formed RSU provides top class educational curriculum to students dropping in from across the country. Till date the university provided affiliation to nearly 200 educational institutions. As per a recent survey, in the academic year 2005 – 06, about 125 000 students got themselves enrolled in allied study programs offered by the university.
