Pandit Sundarlal Sharma (Open) University (PSSOU), Bilaspur, was established on 20th January 2005. The University has been named after Pandit Sundarlal Sharma, and the institute aims at educating more and more people of the rural areas that are both socially as well as economically challenged, and where the people crave to acquire some education, but cannot afford to go to big cities to serve their purpose. Affiliated to the University Grants Commissions, PSSOU is also recognized by the Distance Education Council (DEC), New Delhi.

PSSOU offers special distance education for Handicaps. The university imparts virtual instructions through distance education rather than face-to-face communication. The University has been structured into 6 main faculties: Faculty of Arts, Social Science, Science & Technology, Education, Commerce and Management Studies. The University has been given responsibility by the government to spread education through distance learning mode. And to serve this very purpose, PSSOU has opened up 4 different education centers in Raipur, Bastar, Ambikapur, and Bilaspur.
