It boasts of a 360 acre campus, located 7 km from the erstwhile princely town of Patiala, situated in the South East of Punjab province of India. It has two magnanimous halls – The Guru Gobind Singh hall and Guru Teg Bahadur Hall.

Established in 1932, the University’s main purpose was to create an environment for promotion of Punjabi language. This University is in fact, only the second University in the world (after Hebrew University, Israel) to be named after a language.
