The Battle of Education. Top Universities & Colleges Ranking in India
From the large number of Indian universities and colleges only a minority part forms the national science and technology top. In India a high position in the rankings represents; the first choice of the best students, increased revenues from contract research and better opportunities for internationalization. The differences in quality between institutions, but also within faculties themselves are very large. The Institutes of National Importance in India are scoring well in national university rankings. Unfortunately the top of Indian education institutes are not yet or barely visible on the international rankings. Due the limited study places at top universities & colleges, and as a result of economic growth, a trend identified in the choice that Indian students make. Wide availability, knowledge utilization and salary prospectives are playing an important role in the decission process. Today it is getting harder and harder to get students interested in science. The market lures.
Introduction
The competition to get a hotspot on the best universities and colleges in India is unprecedented vigorously. The number of places available is limited. Many young students are forced to choose for their second, maybe better choice. Engineering, Technology and Medicine are still the most popular graduation directions. But new educational courses & programs like hotel management, media, fashion and health care are also hot, a direct consequence of the rapidly growing indian market and internationalization which India goes through.
At this moment elite educational institutes like the Indian Institutes of Technology and All Indian Institute of Medicine take key positions in the specific niche rankings. But a number of private institutes get back quickly. Privatization seems to contribute to improving the quality of education in India, but the differences in quality is still very high at this moment and is not expected to change quick, both between institutions and faculties.
Institutes of National Importance
In India, 21 institutes are declared as Institutes of National Importance (INI’s). They are the absolute top education institutes in India. The seven top INI’s include the famous Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT’s) at Kharagpur, Mumbai, Chennai, Kanpur, Delhi, Guwahati and Roorkee. There are also six Indian Institutes of Management (IIM’s) making part of the INI programs, including those at Ahmedabad, Bangelore, Indore, Kolkata, Kozhikode and Lucknow.
Finally, the Indian Institutes of Science (IISc) and some medical universities are included in this Top Indian Education Ranking. For example a the All Indian Institute for Medical Science (AIIMS) in Delhi, Tiranal the Sree Chitra Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology, Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research and the Pharmaceutical Education and Research are included to this list.
Within various IIT’s Center of Advanced Study and Research are being implemented, a result of the prioritization of technical-scientific research of the Indian Government, for example in the field of energy (including renewable energy), materials technology and maritime technology.
The IIT’s offer a wide range of Bachelor or Master Degrees in different disciplines. All IIT offer PhD programs. Nearly 80 percent of the PhD’s in engineering is from the IIT’s, IIM’s and IIS together.
Research on the IIM’s is not limited only to the commercial industry. But also serves the non-corporate sector such as agriculture and rural development. Within the IISc programs education and research is mainly focused around the following disciplines; communication electronics, aeronautics, heat-power, high-voltage systems, energy, biochemistry, chemistry, physics and mathematics, automation and control systems and electronic design.
Top Universities & Colleges
Recently, the survey of the college Outlook published an overview of the top education institutes in India. Also a large number of Indian university lecturers and professionals are asked to give their opinions about several institutions. The final score was determined on the basis of weighing factors for each institute.
Medical universities highlighted
India has several world class medical universities, such as AIIMS. This university, with a strong team of teachers, the published last year over 1200 medical articles and the university hospital treats more than 3.5 million patients per year. Many medical schools do not satisfy the minimum requirements as regards intellectual capital or infrastructure, as prepared by the MCI (Medical Council of India).

Remark: If the university hospitals are included in the total verdict, the ranking changes significantly, but AIIMS still leading.
Special pick from Technical universities
From the technical universities, IIT Kharagpur leads the rankings. This university published approximately 1,400 articles in leading scientific journals, 90 patents obtained, and received research funding contracts worth € 140 million.
But there are many universities that have little or no research output to report. If we keep the seven IIT’s and private institutes such as IIT’s Birla out of account, the number of publications and patents is very low in comparison to international standards, just like the revenue generated from contracts.

India Education Trends
In recent years students with the highest scores choose for increasingly popular studies such as health, fashion, communications or hotel management. Experts expect a rapidly increasing demand in these sectors for highly skilled employers. To this is immediately responded by young people which currently follow secondary or higher education streams for these specific Indian emerging markets. A recent study by Price Waterhouse Coopers estimated that the media and entertainment sector will grow over the next five years by nearly 20 percent, and in 2010 an amount of € 2 billion will be reached. The fashion industry, design and production technology for smart textiles will increase in fivefold the next five or ten years in size.
Health care shows a growth of 13 percent per year. New education developments in India such as medical tourism, telemedicine, and the rapid emergence of exclusive clinics and hospitals create a large number of new and particularly well-paid jobs.
There is a mentality change. In the eighties many took additional education to increase salary opportunities and status. The current generation is more of taking risk. They have no problem with job hopping, even on the borders of their own disciplines. This change also has changed the perception of the management company.
Threats to the Succes of Indian Education
The strong Indian market circumstances and the huge salary differences between working in government, in business or a research center makes it difficult for young students to get interested in science.
Government institutes are still setting the tone. The large differences in salary make working for a higher education institute not really attractive, and the shortages for skilled teachers is still growing rapidly. Recently, the Business Line newspaper reported that in 2010 a deficit of around 135 thousand technique teachers may be expected. Moreover, the lack of scientific quality, most institutions (especially private) a scientific job is little challenging.
Businesses and private institutions offer salaries which, even for someone who sees teaching as a vocation, can almost not be refused. For example private hospitals are charging fees that are 50 times higher than those in public hospitals. A university professor told that his graduate students get offers from the private sector which are sometimes ten times higher than his own salary, and then ask him what to do. This is a development which, as in many western countries, makes it increasingly difficult to make young people interested in a scientific career.
International position
In national surveys on the quality of science in India appear the INI’s consistently in the top of the university rankings. Back to Indian standards they are in the absolute top. The Times Higher Education Supplement, however, placed the IIT’s in the past at number 50 on the World University Rankings, and place 36 as measured by overall scientific position.
If only the position in the field of technology is taken into account they are in third place. Not a bad score. In the competitive Shanghai Jiao Tong University’s Academic Ranking of World Universities only IIT Kharagpur appears in the top 500 (!).
The fact that relatively few Indian universities are publishing internationally recognized research papers, few are cited, and only a very limited amount have social science faculties, declares together with small numbers of international students the modest positions in international university ranking lists. The pressure from the Indian government for more and better research is therefore noticeably increasing. The support from Indian Government are linked to success, whereas others measured by the international rating.

How can u dare to write g.j.u hisar above k.u.k u know kuk is a A+ grade univesitiey
Institute of Hotel Management ( Bhopal ) is not in the list. Not saying your list is wrong , but I know for sure that IHM , Bhopal does not need ranking. It itself speak volumes of its glory & success.
Though I would’ve loved it much more if you added a relevant video or at least pictures to back up the explanation, I still thought that your write-up quite helpful. It’s usually hard to make a complicated matter seem very easy. I enjoy your weblog and will sign up to your feed so I will not miss anything. Fantastic content
Plz. Suggest me, hoz the college of IHM in Lucknow?
